What his speech suggests, however, is that the multitude of reforms that he envisions for America is not only a rebuilding of a rock-solid foundation, but also of renovating (though, I believe, not rebuilding as some critics would adamantly point out) the entire house. For sure, the speech has put to light many concerns that the country has had for the longest time, and Whitehouse believes that quick fixes, like those done in administrations past, are not enough to stop a roof from leaking when the storms come, much less get swept away by the winds and floods (Seib). But if we follow The Complete Tales of HJ, ed. by Leon Edel, it was HJ’s 108th published story. And he only had 5 left to write. So JC is very late HJ. He was 65 when it came out. He wasn’t to complete another novel, though he left two unpublished at his death on 28 February 1916 – The Ivory Tower and The Sense of the Past. In those last eight years his main achievements were the Prefaces to the NY edition, and two volumes of autobiography: A Small Boy and Others and Notes of a Son and Brother. At a later point in the Preface he adds that `it is as difficult †¦ to trace the dividing-line between the real and the romantic as to plant a milestone between north and south’. We are coming at them from a different direction, maybe, but there should be some familiar themes here. Associating romance and mixture (and ambiguity): it looks like HJ is reformulating what Walpole was getting at right at the beginning of Gothic fiction: combining different impulses – the verisimilitude associated with the modern romance and the marvels of ancient romance. But HJ goes further in analysing the romantic. Not everything `far and strange’ qualifies as romance, he points out. It’s not a matter of boats, caravans, tigers or ghosts (or bats, or trapdoors, or castles). PP4 It’s not the kind of danger or the appreciation of danger which counts, HJ argues. And there is another key point in James’s thinking about genre. Realism and romance are part of a spectrum – the names for different tendencies in a given work of fiction. In some cases both tendencies may be present. Realism relates to the things we know – aspects of universal human experience. Romance relates to the things we never can directly know, and these need not necessarily be obvious examples of the ‘far and strange’ like ghosts. And HJ sums up in a very famous passage: PP5 ‘The only general attribute of projected romance that I can see, the only one that fits all its cases, is the fact of the kind of experience with which it deals – experience liberated, so to speak; experience disengaged, disembroiled, disencumbered, exempt from the conditions that we usually know to attach to it. ’ ‘Experience disengaged’: this fits TS and JC – these tales are romances (or fairy tales or Gothic stories) because of the ‘kind of experience’ with which they deal. OK. As you have probably noticed, this is a very psychological take on romance: James is thinking about experience as the key factor. But he’s also thinking about technique. In the Preface to The American he goes on to discuss how a writer goes about creating a romance. It’s another very famous quotation in the field. PP6 ‘The greatest intensity may †¦ be arrived at †¦ when the sacrifice of community †¦ has not been too rash. [Romance] must to this end not too flagrantly betray itself; we must even be kept, if possible, for our illusion, from suspecting any sacrifice at all. The balloon of experience is in fact of course tied to the earth, and under that necessity we swing, thanks to a rope of remarkable length, in the more or less commodious car of the imagination; but it is by the rope we know where we are, and from the moment that cable is cut we are at large and unrelated †¦. The art of the romancer is, â€Å"for the fun of it,† insidiously to cut the cable, to cut it without our detecting him’. The romancer, the Gothic writer – we’ve seen this before with Poe – is striving for intensity. And in order to achieve this it’s as if HJ is saying that romance should be, or seem to be, anchored in reality. It loses intensity if we cut the cable at the beginning – or if the reader feels that the cable has been cut. TS would lose intensity without the real world setting, the device of the document, and the fidelity to verisimilitude. The story is set amidst the ‘near and familiar’, and this makes the arrival of the ‘far and strange’ more effective. And we could say something similar about JC. It’s a romance – it deals with ‘things that we never can directly know’ (in this case an alter ego which represents what Spencer Brydon might have become had he stayed in NY rather than spent his life in Europe). But it is set in a seemingly realistic and familiar world: NY, and Brydon’s family home. OK. I’ll come back to NY later in the lecture. But now I want to sketch out the main ways in which JC was read until at least the 1970s. Two influential accounts: PP7 Saul Rosenzweig, ‘The Ghost of Henry James’, Partisan Review 11. 4 (1944), 436-55 Leon Edel, The Life of Henry James (1972) Rosenzweig. Like Edmund Wilson, who claimed in 1934 that the governess in TS was a ‘case of neurotic sex repression’ and that the ghosts ‘are not real ghosts at all’ but merely the governess’s delusions. Both R and EW belong to the early American school of Freudian literary criticism. Rosenzweig. Reads fiction in the light of biography. Family experiences familiar to James. Henry James Snr’s ‘vastation’ (Society: The Redeemed Form of Man, 1879) and William James’s description of ‘a horrible fear of my own existence’ which connected itself with the image of a patient in an asylum ‘That shape am I, I felt, potentially’ (Varieties of Religious Experience, Lectures 6 and 7). But Rosenzweig is also thinking about James’s own traumatic experiences. HJ ghost stories linked by Rosenzweig to an injury experienced while putting out a fire in 1860, just before the outbreak of the American Civil War (back to early HJ tales). What connects these personal experiences? For Rosenzweig, J’s ghosts from the beginning tend to arise from paths not taken, futures not realised, other selves not lived. HJ and the ‘obscure hurt’ (described in Notes of a Son and Brother). A wound causes ‘passional death’ (eg ‘The Story of a Year’, 1865). The traumatic event, repeated again and again. James responds by writing fantasies in which characters achieve compensatory victories. HJ’s hurt = attempt to repeat his father’s own youthful injury. Oedipal (son v. father). It’s a case of castration anxiety, then. JC represents a return of the repressed – an attempt to achieve victory over another more ‘masculine’ self. HJ – the wounded young man who did not serve in the Civil War and at some level felt inadequate as a man. For R, HJ in writing JC was trying ‘to repair, if possible, the injury and to complete the unfinished experience of his youth. He was, as it were, haunted by the ghost of his own past. ’ Brydon’s alter ego = the man who stayed, who could perform a normative masculine role because he fought in the Civil War (he suffers the injury). So if the castration narrative is going to be resolved successfully, Brydon has to triumph over his alter ego. But for R. HJ unable to fantasize a satisfactory resolution for Brydon. Leon Edel. Influenced by Rosenzweig and makes particular reference to James’s youthful injury. Develops the idea of a compensatory fantasy of mastery, of masculinity retrieved and reasserted, with reference to a dream described by HJ in A Small Boy and Others PP8 It’s not clear exactly when HJ had this dream, but it was probably in later life. And the dream was set in the Galerie d’Apollon in the Louvre (contains Gericault’s painting ‘The Raft of the Medusa’). HJ, terrified, trying to defend himself against an assailant pushing open a door. Manages to turn the tables and finds his enemy fleeing before him: PP9 Routed, dismayed, the tables turned upon him by my so surpassing him for straight aggression and dire intention, my visitant was already but a diminished spot in the long perspective, the tremendous, glorious hall †¦ over the far-gleaming floor of which †¦ he sped for his life, while a great storm of thunder and lightning played through the deep embrasures of high windows at the right’. It was, J wrote in SBO, an `immens e hallucination’. HJ’s encounter and Brydon’s might be linked. But in HJ’s dream he is victorious and in JC Brydon collapses in a faint. An entry HJ’s notebook tells an even more interesting story. And it also tends to confirm the idea that the dream and the story are indeed linked. Because James at first describes his idea for JC as if it did indeed follow the triumphant trajectory of the dream: PP10 ‘My hero’s adventure †¦ takes the form so to speak of his turning the tables †¦ on a â€Å"ghost† or whatever, a visiting or haunting apparition otherwise qualified to appal him; and thereby winning a sort of victory by the appearance, and the evidence, that this personage or presence was more overwhelmingly affected by him than he by it’. OK. As we’ve seen, both Edel and Rosenzweig’s readings of JC are informed by Freudian theory. But to modern readers there are a number of problems with how these theories are being used: PP11 †¢Ã¢â‚¬ËœVulgar’ or `wild’ Freudianism – saying that explanatory factor is sex, as if that was the answer to everything. †¢Psychoanalysing characters – what sense does this make, really? They aren’t patients. What does a diagnosis mean? †¢Biographical readings of texts – are these really what we are trying to produce? Can we really psychoanalyse authors? Contemporary Freudian theory is more subtle: it tends to use psychoanalytical concepts to elucidate textual meaning without claiming that they explain characters or offer some privileged insight into author’s intention. So what other approaches might we take to JC? I said that the idea for JC came to James in August 1906. Between 1904 and 1905 he had, like Brydon, revisited US for the first time in a quarter of a century. And in 1907 he published an account of his travels, The American Scene. AS is now recognized as one of the great documents of late ‘gilded age’ US (1865-1914). And the relation between this text – between HJ’s visit to US and JC itself – is crucial. PP12 At one level, HJ’s first impression of NY = one of stark reality (if we define the real by external features, by objects). He talks of ‘the same old sordid facts, all the ugly items that had seemed destined so long ago to fall apart from their very cynicism †¦ the rude cavities, the loose cobbles, the dislodged supports, the unreclaimed pools, of the roadway; the unregulated traffic †¦ the corpulent constables †¦ red-faced, off their balance, as from too conscious an affinity with â€Å"saloon† civilization. But then HJ’s tone subtly changes. He talks of ‘some shy principle of picturesqueness’: NY reminds James of Naples, Tangiers or Constantinople. He becomes excited, thrilled even. HJ now begins to write about ‘the romantic †¦ circumstance of one’s having had to wait till now to read †¦ such meagre meanings as this into a page at which one’s geography might so easily have opened’. James is beginning to have an adventure: his experience of New York is an uncanny mixture of the real and the romantic, the things one cannot not know and the things that can only be imagined. New York is a place of money and power, railways and hotels, but also of ‘mystery’, of ‘wonder’ and also of ‘florid ghosts’ from the past. Something really strange has happened here. In HJ’s earlier work – up to and including TS – the place for ghosts and for romance (at least for an American tourist like HJ) was Europe. In ‘A Passionate Pilgrim’ (1871), for example, the character Clement Searle, an American, arrives in England hoping to establish his claim to an ancestral seat abandoned by one of his forebears. He falls in love with England – with the whole sense of the past. He feels that he is the double or ghost of his ancient forebear. At one point the narrator describes the following scene: PP13 ‘I heard the great clock in the little parlour below strike twelve, one, half-past one. Just as the vibration of this last stroke was dying on the air the door of communication with Searles room was flung open and my companion stood on the threshold, pale as a corpse, in his nightshirt, shining like a phantom against the darkness behind him. â€Å"Look well at me! † he intensely gasped; â€Å"touch me, embrace me, revere me! You see a man who has seen a ghost! †Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ For the young James, Europe = romantic; America represents the reality he is trying to escape. To find transatlantic Gothic, one travelled east from New York or Boston to Paris or Rome. For James in his 60s, however, the relations have reversed: now it’s America which represents, beneath its obvious surface reality, possibilities of romance. Meanwhile read pp. 74-5 of The American Scene: The aspect the power wears then is indescribable; it is the power of the most extravagant of cities, rejoicing, as with the voice of the morning, in its might, its fortune, its unsurpassable conditions, and imparting to every object and element, to the motion and expression of every floating, hurrying, panting thing, to the throb of ferries and tugs, to the plash of waves and the play of win ds and the glint of lights and the shrill of whistles and the quality and authority of breeze-borne criesall, practically, a diffused, wasted clamour of detonationssomething of its sharp free accent and, above all, of its sovereign sense of being backed and able to back. The universal applied passion struck me as shining unprecedentedly out of the composition; in the bigness and bravery and insolence, especially, of everything that rushed and shrieked; in the air as of a great intricate frenzied dance, half merry, half desperate, or at least half defiant, performed on the huge watery floor. This appearance of the bold lacing-together, across the waters, of the scattered members of the monstrous organismlacing as by the ceaseless play of an enormous system of steam-shuttles or electric bobbins (I scarce know what to call them), commensurate in form with their infinite workdoes perhaps more than anything else to give the pitch of the vision of energy. One has the sense that the monster grows and grows, flinging abroad its loose limbs even as some unmannered young giant at his larks, and that the binding stitches must for ever fly further and faster and draw harder; the future complexity of the web, all under the sky and over the sea, becoming thus that of some colossal set of clockworks, some steel-souled machine-room of brandished arms and hammering fists and opening and closing jaws. The immeasurable bridges are but as the horizontal sheaths of pistons working at high pressure, day and night, and subject, one apprehends with perhaps inconsistent gloom, to certain, to fantastic, to merciless multiplication. In the light of this apprehension indeed the breezy brightness of the Bay puts on the semblance of the vast white page that awaits beyond any other perhaps the black overscoring of science. ’ In New York in 1905, then, and a few years later in JC, HJ had begun to find his ghosts not in the Old World but the New. Uncannily, there is romance in the seemingly realistic, a new strangeness in what for HJ was known of old and long familiar. And we can see this uncanny reversal in JC too: PP15 Proportions and values were upside-down; the ugly things he had expected, the ugly things of his far-away youth, when he had too promptly waked up to a sense of the ugly – these uncanny phenomena placed him rather, as it happened, under the charm; whereas the †Å"swagger† things, the modern, the monstrous, the famous things †¦ were exactly his sources of dismay. ’ OK. What have we been thinking about so far? PP16 †¢JC and AS †¢Uncanny reversibility of real and romantic †¢Ã¢â‚¬ËœCutting the cable’: modern NY and Brydon’s experience †¢Freudian themes: individual and family traumas, return of the repressed, alter ego, compensatory fantasy of power in Galerie d’Apollon dream if not in JC itself. We’ve also seen some of the limits of the Freudian approach. And we’ve gone outside this to begin to think about the story in its time and as a response to the huge phenomenon of NY itself (anybody doing NYNY? ). But what Freudian readings do bring to our attention, I think, is the theme of gender and in particular of masculinity. And I now want to pursue this in a more specifically biographical and historical context in the remainder of the lecture. PP17 Brydon – leisured self, European and aestheticized self seen in some ways as feminized self. In spite of his wound (castration? ), Brydon’s alter ego seems to incarnate a masculinity he can’t aspire to. And this brings us to some contemporary research on JC. In a recent article, Philip Horne proposes that JC has a more specific historical reference than has previously been recognised. Theodore Roosevelt and HJ met only 4 times. TR in a letter once called HJ ‘a miserable little snob’. Essay on ‘True Americanism’ (1894): PP18 ‘Thus it is with the undersized man of letters, who flees his country because he, with his delicate, effeminate sensitiveness, finds the conditions of life on this side of the water crude and raw; in other words, because he finds that he can not play a man’s part among men, and so goes where he will be sheltered from the winds that harden stouter souls. This emigre may write graceful and pretty verses, essays, novels; but he will never do work to compete with that of his brother, who is strong enough to stand on his own feet, and do his work as an American. ’ A coded attack on HJ as unpatriotic and unmanly. But who was Theodore Roosevelt and what did he stand for? Roosevelt self-consciously embodied ‘rugged masculinity’ in a series of political roles: as NY Police Commisioner 1895-7, Assistant Secretary of the Navy 1897-8, leader of the Rough Riders who invaded Cuba during the Spanish American War 1898 and subsequently, following the assassination of McKinley, as 26th President of the US, serving two terms between 1901 and 1909. (He is also one of the 4 Presidents carved into the side of Mount Rushmore). TR in office when HJ published JC. Roosevelt: well known in younger life as a boxer and hunter. And now, think of the language Brydon uses as he wanders around the house on the jolly corner in the depths of the night: he’s stalking, he’s on the track of big game. Then think of the final description of Brydon’s encounter with his alter ego: the man’s formal dress and, most particularly, his ‘dangling double eye-glass’. A TR trademark, as we can see in this image: PP19 Perhaps, then, HJ used the figure of TR to inform his portrait of Brydon’s other, the representative of a modern, acquisitive Americanism and of an active, violent masculinity. Brydon himself on the other hand stands, perhaps, for an alternative masculinity based on subtlety of perception and of consciousness.

Sonnet and No Second Troy Essays Sonnet and No Second Troy Paper Sonnet and No Second Troy Paper Essay Topic: Poetry In this essay Im going to be comparing two love poems. The two poems I will be comparing are Sonnet be Edna St Vincent Millay and No Second Troy composed by Irelands most famous writer, William Butler Yeats. I hope to look in detail at both poems and to be able to compare and contrast both pieces. Sonnet was written in 1917 be Edna St Vincent Millay. Edna St Vincent Millay was a middle class citizen born in Maine, America. She was very well educated and began writing poetry from the age of 15. Sonnet is a love poem structured around betrayal and depression, we can see this in the first line Time does not bring relief; you all have lied Here Edna St Vincent Millay is referring to the people that told her at the time of separation that things would get better in time and directly accuses a friend or family of lying to her. The first and second lines make use of enjambment which makes the poem flow, it gives the poem a slow rhythm to suit her emotions. Enjambment is used frequently throughout the poem. Who told me time would ease me of my pain! Millay uses an accusation tone here to show her emotions, which I believe suggests that she is unstable, as she wants to blame anybody apart from herself. Millay uses personification to display her emotions as the weeping of the rain which refers to her tears and also rhymes with pain in the previous line. She also uses personification in I miss him at the shrinking of the tide To say that she misses him when the tide is out which represents peace and quiet in this situation, tide rhymes with lied in the opening line of the poem. Edna St Vincent Millay compares there relationship with old snow. For example, The old snows melt from every mountain-side In my opinion melting snow is a perfect description as it represents their relationship in two ways: one is that snow melts representing their relationship disappearing, and secondly that snow is cold also representing their cold and non affectionate relationship. Millay describes their present relationship situation very cleverly by describing it as smoke. As the poet says, And last years leaves are smoke in every lane She uses a perfect description here again as smoke is almost non existent and like the melting snow in the previous lines it shows that the relationship no longer exists, but unlike the cold snow smoke resembles fire and heat which could mean that they had a fiery relationship. In the past four lines the poet has mentioned all four seasons, I think she has done this so that she can show the reader that she misses him all year round and that she still loves him. I believe that Edna St Vincent Millay is obsessed with him, a good example of this is, But last years bitter loving must remain Heaped on my heart, and my old thoughts abide Thins is a great example of compulsive behaviour as she admits that the love was bitter but its still better than nothing, Edna St Vincent Millay uses an oxymoron to emphasise on the bitter loving in my opinion this is used at exactly the right time as its showing the reader that she must accept a negative to experience a little glimpse of a positive one. There is also repetition with the words last year used in the previous line also. Enjambment is used once again here to give the poem a flow and a slow tempo to suit her emotions. I think that Edna St Vincent Millay has linked the octet to the sestet very cleverly, she uses the last five words of the octet to liken it to the sestet and to completely change her emotions. The octet is dominated by her wanting the love to be mutual but the last five words are about wanting to forget him which leads into the sestet which is dominated by her feelings and her efforts to forget him. You can observe this easily in the opening line, There are hundred places where I fear To go, so with his memory they brim! Edna Millay cant forget him, she wants to forget him but she cant, this proves my point from before the quotation. She also uses hyperbole to emphasis the fact that she cant go any were his memory does not exist. And entering with relief some quiet place Where never fell his foot or shone his face Here we can see that Edna Millay still thinks of him as divine, although not literally this is obvious when she says or shone his face. This shows that she still loves him. I find it intriguing that she uses the verb shone as this is sometime used when talking about a star or an angel, this could mean that she thinks, metaphorically that hes an angel. She continues to say that when she goes to a place where his foot has never fallen or where his face has never shone so she remembers him. I say, There is no memory of him here! And so stand stricken, so remembering him! The poem has a slow rhythm and uses imagery throughout and techniques such as enjambment, personification, sibilance, oxymoron and hyperbole. The second poem I will be comparing is No Second Troy. No Second Troy was written in 1910 by Irelands most famous writer, William Butler Yeats was born in 1865 and was brought up and educated in Dublin. William Butler Yeats had an interest in Irish literature from a very young age and was quoted as being the pillar in Irish literature. During Yeats early life he fell deeply in love with a lady called Maude Gonne, in 1901 Yeats proposed unsuccessfully for the third time, she saying that she would never marry. In 1903 much to Yeats dislike she married an Irish nationalist Major John McBride. William Butler Yeats, Maud Gonne and Major John McBride all shared one dream, Irish Independence. Gonnes obsession with the concept of Irish independence was much greater than Yeats. No Second Troy is a love poem built around the structure of love, violence and depression. The title suggests that Yeats compares Maude Gonne with Helen of Troy. The Poem begins with a rhetorical question Why should I blame her that she filled my days with misery I think he uses the rhetorical question here to tell the readers that Gonne wouldnt care if she had filled his days with misery and that all she cares about is Irish independence. Referring to one of my earlier points William Butler Yeats believes in what Gonne is fighting for but not the way shes doing it. As he writes, Or that she would of late Have taught most ignorant men most violent ways William Butler Yeats tells the reader that she is to blame for the IRA, when he says Taught to ignorant men most violent ways this could mean that she uses her beauty to entice people in to fighting for her, just like Helen of Troy. William Butler Yeats gives us his opinion on the IRA quite cleverly when he mentions violence, although he doesnt mention the IRA you still get his opinion, this is done very cleverly by Yeats. William Butler Yeats proves him self correct in saying that the way they are trying to get Irish independence is wrong when he says Or hurled the little streets upon the great This is a factual quote from No Second Troy, Yeats tells the audience that the British look down on the Irish. Yeats uses little to describe the Irish, I think he uses little to try and say that they are lower class compared to the British this can be seen easily when he calls the British great . But Yeats later goes on to say Had they but courage equal to desire. To me this is a very important quotation from the poem as he is saying if the Irishs courage was equal to their ambition they could be like the British, but it is as if he is giving advice because unlike before he is not running the plan down. Yeats wants Irish Independence and is trying to encourage the Irish by telling them that they can become great but they must fight. William Butler Yeats believes that violence isnt the way to gain independence. He wants Maud Gonne to fight for it in a civilized way, legally, this can be observed in the following lines. What could have made her peaceful with a mind That nobleness made simple as a fire. Butler Yeats says here that Gonne could have been happy if she would have done it without violence and did things politically and not violently and that her passion for Irish independence could have been achieved by doing it his way. Yeats goes back to talking about Maud Gonne in a very positive way- With beauty like a tightened bow, a kind That is not natural in an age like this Here you can see that Yeats is obsessed with Maud Gonne when he says that Gonnes beauty was not natural. We can see Yeats opinion of her was very impressive, in my opinion Yeats is telling the reader that her beauty is too good for earth, but after reading the next line you can see that unnatural beauty can come with consequences and be dangerous. Being high and solitary and most stern? Yeats tells the reader that Maud Gonne beauty has led her to arrogance and to an unhappy and emotionally lonely life. A reason for this could be that her obsession with independence has dominated her life and has mentally changed her. In my opinion William Butler Yeats changes from being desirable at the start of the poem to being a person looking back in hindsight, this can be seen in this following quote Why, what could she have done, being what she is? Was there another Troy for her to burn? From this quote you can see why I thought that he was looking back in hindsight, he looks back in hindsight and asks him self what could he or she have done to prevent the solitary and the sternest behaviour. When he says Was there another Troy for her to burn? I think he says this for two possible reasons, one being that she could ruin Ireland and that Troy would represent Ireland and Burn could resemble the fighting in Ireland. The other possibility is that she is like Helen of Troy and that she could become all cause of conflict. The poem begins with a rhetorical question and ends with a rhetorical question, this is just one of the numerous techniques used by Yeats an other technique that Yeats uses is enjambment, W B Yeats uses enjambment all throughout the poem to give it a medium pace rhythm. After reading and analyzing both Sonnet and No Second Troy I can finally compare and contrast. One of the many comparisons is that both poems have been subject of inspiration. Sonnet is inspired by Millay former partner as is Yeats poem. They are both based on the theme of love and both are heavily negative and slightly obsesive. For example this quotation from Sonnet proves just how eccentric her love for him is, last years bitter loving must remain. Both poets use enjambment frequently throughout the entire poems. Here is an example from No second Troy, WHY should I blame her that she filled my days With misery, or that she would of late Have taught to ignorant men most violant ways In my opinion enjambment has been very instrumental to both poets as it allows the poem to flow nicely and to control the rhythym and pace of the poem. For example, enjambment has been used here But last years bitter loving must remain Heaped on my heart, and my old thoughts abide! Here it is used to give the poem a medium paced rhythym and is very effective. Both poems use a small amount of hyperbole, a great example of hyperbole is in Sonnet where Millay says There are a hundread places where I fear to go. An example of hyperbole from No Second Troy is That nobleness made simple as fire. Although there are many comparisons between both poems there are also many differences. For example No Second Troy uses rhetorical questions where Millay Sonnet doesnt. I think rhetorical questions play a large part in Yeats poem as it brings more emotion to the poem. A good example of this is WHY should I blame her that she filled my days with misery?. An other difference is that Millay uses an oxymoron in Sonnet. In my opinion a good example of an oxymoron from Sonnet is But last years bitter loving must remain. I think the oxymoron shows strong emphasis on the ex-relationship status and gives us an insight on what the relationship used to be like. A big difference in both poems is the flow of the poems. This is mostly effected by the enjembments used and the rhyming scheme. Sonnet doesnt follow any rhyming scheme where as No Second Troy does. This has a large impact on the flow of both poems which are completely different. Sonnet flows much faster than No Second Troy making it much better to read.

How to Read and Write Binary Numbers When you learn most types of computer programming, you touch upon the subject of binary numbers. The binary number system plays an important role in how information is stored on computers because computers only understand numbers - specifically, base 2 numbers. The binary number system is a base 2 system that uses only the numerals 0 and 1 to represent off and on in a computers electrical system. The two binary digits 0 and 1 are used in combination to communicate text and  computer processor instructions. Although the concept of binary numbers is simple once explained, reading and writing binary is not clear at first. To understand binary numbers, which use a base 2 system, first look at the more familiar system of base 10 numbers. Writing in Base 10 Take the three-digit number 345, for example. The farthest right number, 5, represents the 1s column, and there are 5 ones. The next number from the right, the 4, represents the 10s column. Interpret the number 4 in the 10s column as 40. The third column, which contains the 3, represents the 100s column. Many people know base 10 through education and years of exposure to numbers. The Base 2 System Binary works in a similar way. In base 2, each column represents a value that is double the previous value. The values of positions, starting on the right, are 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, and so on. The number one is represented as 1 in both base ten and binary, so lets move on to the number two. In base ten, it is represented with a 2. Binary Number Column Values When you know how binary works, reading it is simply a matter of doing some simple math. For example: 1001:  Since we know the value each of these slots represents, then we know this number represents 8 0 0 1. Teaching Meditation to Classes in Philosophy ABSTRACT: In alignment with the overall theme of the congress, "Philosophy Teaching Humanity," this paper proposes that teachers of philosophy consider instructing their students in simple techniques of meditation. By meditation I mean the practice of mindfulness which typically begins by paying clear, steady, non-reactive attention to the sensations of one's own breathing, and then extending this attention to embrace all bodily sensations, feelings, moods, thoughts, and intentions. I discuss how to integrate meditation practically in the philosophy classroom and then respond to three objections that have been raised to that practice. I then discuss the potential benefits of the practice, arguing first of all that meditation has academic benefits, especially in courses in Asian philosophy. But of much wider application is the wisdom of non-attachment which the mediation naturally evokes primarily through the experience of impermanence. The potential benefits of the paradigm are then briefly indicated as related to our experience of body, mind, society and nature. I conclude by commending the proposal as a small but important practical step philosophy teachers can take to help our fellow humans navigate the challenging transformation of our time. I. A Proposal: Situating the Need and Proposing a Response The grand theme of our Congress is "Philosophy Educating Humanity". It is heartening to see philosophers from all over the world pondering how we can be of service to our species; refocusing on the root meaning of "philosophy" as "love of wisdom", we seek to be of real help in a world in the throes of many transformations. Those of us who teach philosophy in formal academic environments are already in a position to make a direct difference in the lives of our students; like it or not, we are at some level opinion leaders in our communities--what we teach and how we teach matters. And so we ask ourselves how can we best use the power that we have? Clearly we can help our students and fellow human beings by teaching them skills of discursive rationality; when we can define our meanings precisely, use our terms consistently, argue coherently, and adhere to high standards of evidence, then we are better able to avoid dogmatism and bring an effective intelligence to bear on the problems of living that face us. These skills will always be a precious resource philosophy can offer humanity. And yet there is much more to philosophy than this.

1. Explain a person’s attitude towards visiting Disneyland in Hong Kong in terms of the tri-component model. A tri-component attitude model consists of three major components as affect, cognition and conation. It is implying that Disneyland in Hong Kong has the unique attraction towards the customer. The first part of this model refers to cognition that is knowledge and perception that are acquired by a combination of the attitude object and related information from different sources. With reference to visiting Disneyland in Hong Kong it is a great place to visit and have a fun with the kids, where people are able to rest from common daily activities. The cognitive component towards Disneyland is what people experienced by visiting this place and what information they got from various sources (friends, ads). Affective component considers a person’s feelings and emotional response to an attitude object. It is mostly learnt during our daily live. This is the way as we fee l. We may love the place as Disneyland. It gives joy, happiness and join the family. It could have a good emotion or feeling about it. Conation, the final component concerns how the consumer will behave with regard to attitude object. People will go and visit Disneyland in Hong Kong and spend time with the family there. 2. What sources influenced your attitudes about studying buyer behaviour before classes started? Has your initial attitude changed since the unit started? If so, how? Social media and discussion with my colleagues had influenced my attitudes about studying buyer behaviour before my classes started. I found out that it could be very interesting to get know how consumer behaves in reply to different ads, promotions or tricks used by the producers. My initial attitudes were positive and motivation were on the highest level and so far nothing has changed. I still believe that studying buyer behaviour is interesting and can bring much knowledge that people don’t recognize in daily life during the shopping.
